What do you see when you look at a website…???
A pretty picturesque layout with great looking images, graphics, animations, the whole 9 yards right?
What we web developers tend to see is something similar to what you may have seen in the movie The Matrix, which is a whole bunch of code (HTML) behind the website that is telling your internet browser to place an image here, put some text there, give it a name, size, colour, visibility etc…
But that’s not all we see. We also see an opportunity to transform this code into something special and make it work accordingly, not only for our clients, but within the search engine rankings as well.
Given the right techniques have been used throughout the development and structure of your website, and your site could be something more than just picturesque, for example as you may know, higher rankings within search engines can open up a lot of new doors with great opportunities for almost any business online.
But how do we achieve such results?
Well, like I said, it all comes back to the coding and structure behind your website.
Basically, your site needs to contain the following:
- Well structured, clean HTML and other coding used throughout the site’s pages
- Descriptive text/content and suitable page headings used in each of the pages
- Good use of Meta Elements including a Title tag, Keywords and a Description
- Image ALT and link Title tags
- Suitable file and page names used throughout the site
- A sitemap with links to all pages for good accessibility and usability
- A Resources page with good reciprocal links to higher ranked sites similar to your own
Using such techniques as these will not only make it easier for your site to be indexed and referenced by search engines, but also give your site a greater chance of moving higher within the search engine rankings, better return on investment and better chance of a high ranking.
But, don’t forget, good development doesn’t only better the chances of your website performing well within the search engines, but also makes your site easier to understand, more cost effective to keep updated, cross browser and user friendly as well.
